The countdown is over and winter is officially underway in Breck as skiers and riders took to the slopes today when Breckenridge Ski Resort opened for its 52nd season this morning just before 9 a.m. MST. While cheers and free Ski Hill Grill signature éclairs filled the base area, the resort also offered a tribute to United States military personnel as part of its opening ceremonies and in honor of Veteran’s Day Weekend.

The first two chairs of the morning were held for the resort’s “Six Days of Sixes” state-wide contest winners and a special guest, skier and American hero Master Sgt. Richard Gibbons of the Colorado Air National Guard, a veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom and the War Against Terror. The Master Sergeant is a recipient of the Bronze Star, the fourth highest individual medal in the US military, and the Purple Heart, awarded to those who have been wounded or killed while serving on behalf of our country.

“This morning’s festivities were a fantastic culmination of all the events that took place during Breck Opening Week,” said Kieran Cain, Breckenridge Ski Resort’s marketing director. “The ability for us to share the excitement and pageantry of the opening of the season at Breck with our guests and make them part of the celebration is always rewarding, and becomes even more special at the start of such an historic year as this one.”

This season, Breckenridge will have one of its most landmark years ever, as the resort adds over 540 acres to its famous landscape with the new Peak 6 expansion. Peak 6 will include 400 acres of lift-served terrain and 143 acres of hike-to terrain, representing a 23 percent increase in the resort’s skiable acreage. This is the most notable ski area expansion in at least the past decade anywhere in the world, and will feature high-alpine, intermediate bowl skiing – a rare find in North America.  Peak 6 lifts and terrain should open along with the majority of the resort’s upper mountain terrain in mid-to-late December, weather depending. Visit www.Breckenridge.com/Peak6 for the latest news and content on the Peak 6 project.

Breckenridge Ski Resort requires all skiers and riders to observe all posted signs and warnings. Closed trails may contain hazards due to limited natural snow coverage and snow making operations. Please keep off closed trails and out of closed areas for safety reasons.

Breckenridge Ski Resort will offer a brand new exclusive opportunity for guests staying in official resort lodging properties this winter. The “First Tracks Fridays” program will allow guests staying at official lodging properties of Breckenridge Ski Resort to access the mountain one hour before it opens to the general public on Friday mornings throughout the 2013/14 winter ski season.  Breck First Tracks Fridays will commence once mountain conditions allow this winter, and will occur every Friday throughout the remainder of the season.
