Sustainability Stories

Park City Mountain and Vail Resorts have made significant progress toward our sustainability goal of reaching a zero net operating footprint by 2030.

  • As part of Vail Resorts Commitment to Zero, in April 2024, the Elektron Solar Project achieved commercial operation. This new 80 megawatt solar farm outside Salt Lake City provides on-grid solar energy for 100 percent of Park City Mountain’s electricity needs. In 2022, Vail Resorts surpassed our 2025 interim goal of 50% progress toward zero net emissions, three years early, and achieved 100% renewable electricity across our North American operations (including Park City Mountain).

  • As part of Commitment to Zero, Vail Resorts committed $25 million in energy-efficiency investments across our resorts, with a focus on snowmaking, buildings, and lifts. Energy efficiency is a key strategy in reducing the emissions associated with our operations.  This season, Park City's snowmaking department will be introducing new solar-powered snow guns to its existing system that operates with approximately 70% low-e guns. The snowmaking department is focused on operating the snowmaking system as efficiently as possible, which involves only making snow during optimal temperatures and investing in new low-energy snowmaking equipment.

  • Between August 2022 and July 2023, Vail Resorts reduced landfill waste by nearly 1.2 million pounds, compared to the previous year. This result was largely due to capital investment, employee engagement and education, increased diversion streams such as compost program expansions, and snack wrapper recycling. Along with all Vail Resorts’ resorts, Park City will continue to innovate to eliminate waste sent to landfill based on a common set of guiding principles: to reduce waste at the source, reuse materials, and recycle or compost the rest.
