Jamie Anderson Reclaims The Dew Tour Slopestyle Title, While Burton Snowboards and Atomic Skis Take Team Challenge Honors
Dec. 11, 2016 (BRECKENRIDGE, Colo.)— With a fresh coat of new snow, it was a winter wonderland at Breckenridge Ski Resort on day three of the 2016 Dew Tour ski and snowboard competition, presented by Mountain Dew® and TEN: The Enthusiast Network. Dew Tour’s first ever ski and snowboard Team Challenge went down today, making for a fun and exciting event for both athletes and spectators. Download event images HERE and video HERE.
Day three began with six of the best teams in skiing and snowboarding, going head to head in the jib section. Each team consisted of a seasoned legend in the sport as team captain, a rail competitor and a jump competitor. Originally, the jib section score would be combined with the jump section score to determine the winners. Due to winds brought in by another snow storm, the jump section was canceled and the competition was modified so all team members would compete in the jib section.
On the snowboard side, team Burton came out on top in the end, led by none other than Terje Haakonsen from Norway as Team Captain. Coming off his streetstyle win Friday night, Darcy Sharpe (CAN) locked a solid run for his team in the first heat, scoring an 87.00 and the top spot going into round two. Highlights from Sharpe’s run included an alley-oop frontside bluntside 270 on the Toyota feature and a back tail slide indy grab on the lower rail indy grab.
“I’m super happy,” said Sharpe. “This contest format is so wicked and I’m just thankful to be here with all of these different style riders.”
2016 Dew Tour Slopestyle champ, Mark McMorris (CAN), secured the win for Burton with the highest scoring run in the second heat. McMorris’ run consisted of a frontside nose blunt 270 and frontside 270 on, 270 off of the bottom feature, scoring him an 84.00.
“Having the Burton team and Uncle T [Terje Haakonsen] up there was huge,” said McMorris. “It was very special and we were very blessed to have Terje at our side.”
Team Nitro with Marcus Kleveland (NOR) and Sebastien Toutant (CAN) came in second, with a combined total of 168.00, just three points shy of Burton’s score. Reid Smith (USA) and Brandon Davis (USA) representing Team Ride followed in third.
The skiers kept it exciting by constantly one-upping each other on practically every run. After two heated battles, Team Atomic officially took the win with a combined total of 183.66. Atomic’s Gus Kenworthy (USA) laid down a solid run in the first heat while teammate Jossi Wells (NZL), who was originally captain, showed up and schooled the field in the final round. Wells’ stellar run complete with a switch rightside 270 on, 270 off, on the top rail, alley-oop rightside 270 and switch 630, 270 out on the last down rail, scored him a 93.66, solidifying the win.
“I had the utmost confidence in Jossi,” said Kenworthy. “I was stoked to land a run. I knew a 90.00 was a solid score, but I knew he could step it up even beyond that and he did.”
“We’re all homies regardless of sponsors, but it was super fun to get to team up and be able to come through for the win,” said Wells. “I had a great time out here.”
Nick Goepper (USA) and Alex Beaulieu-Marchannd (CAN) held it down for Völkl to take home second place. Third place went to Head with Evan McEachran (CAN) and Tjäder Jesper (SWE) skiing solid.
With consistent snow storms bringing more than 31 inches of snow to Breckenridge Ski Resort, Colo. over the last seven days, the competition was altered accordingly throughout the weekend to ensure it was the safest and best for riders and fans. After several attempts for the female snowboarders to compete in the jump section for the slopestyle title, it was finally decided today to determine a winner based on the jib section results from Saturday.
No stranger to the podium, Jamie Anderson (USA), reclaimed her Dew Tour Slopestyle Title today. Her winning jib run from Saturday consisted of a cab tail switch-up to back tail, frontside 270 on the down rail, 50-50 off the pole jam to slide across the Toyota cage with a stalefish off, and a tailside to fakie on the flat to down kink rail, scoring her a 91.33.
“It’s been an epic weekend,” said Anderson. “I’m just so happy. Unfortunately, we didn’t get to jump today, but I don’t think I’ve ever won a rail jam, so I’m pretty stoked. I’m loving the new setup. It’s sweet.”
Runner ups behind Anderson were 16-year-old, Hailey Langland (USA), with her score of 86.00 and last year’s second place winner, Spencer O’Brien (CAN), with a best score of 80.00.
A soldout crowd with more than 1,000 people came out Saturday night for the Dew Tour weekend concert. DJ A-Trak and rapper D.R.A.M. got the party started, while New York rapper Joey Bada$$ headlined the show at the Riverwalk Center in Downtown Breckenridge as part of the reimagined Dew Tour ski and snowboard competition and festival.
