PARK CITY, Utah. – Sept. 21, 2015 – This past Saturday, Sept. 19, approximately 200 Park City employees gathered to support various water quality projects along East Canyon Creek near Mormon Flats, the Spring Creek Trailhead and surrounding areas. Working in partnership with Swaner EcoCenter, Trout Unlimited and the East Canyon Watershed Committee, the volunteers represented a portion of 2,000 Vail Resorts employees giving back that day in locations across the country as part of Vail Resorts’ annual EpicPromise Day.
Originally established in 2010, EpicPromise Day brings together employees, their friends and their families, to support a local community need. Since its founding, the annual EpicPromise Day has allowed over 6,700 volunteers to give nearly 26,000 hours of time to local projects.
“Each year, EpicPromise Day is an opportunity for our employees to directly support the communities where they live and where we operate,” said Bill Rock chief operating officer for Park City. “We are grateful for their commitment to this program and appreciate the opportunity to partner with Swaner EcoCenter and Trout Unlimited to support local environmental projects that improve Park City’s water quality and aquatic habitats.”
Over the last six years, Vail Resorts has consistently demonstrated a commitment to sustainability through environmental and community support. Through EpicPromise, the company contributes $7.8 million in charitable donations to 250 nonprofit partners, organizes 20,000 hours of company-sponsored employee volunteer time, and executes on a variety of environmental initiatives each year.
As part of this year’s EpicPromise Day, Park City employees planted over 1,600 willow trees near eroding stream banks by lower East Canyon Creek at Mormon Flats. Volunteers also built beaver analog structures in a small spring that flows into East Canyon Creek to create 3 artificial beaver ponds. In the Swaner Preserve and Newpark area, Park City employees collected over 40 trash bags of litter and thistle seed heads, participated in macrophyte removal to improve stream health and placed 100 recycled Christmas trees in the stream to help prevent erosion.
