May 12, 2015 — Beaver Creek’s signature Blues, Brews & BBQ festival tantalizes the taste buds for the twelfth time over Memorial Day weekend, serving up sweet and tangy barbecue, delectable microbrews, and tasty blues jams including popular funk band Dumpstaphunk on Saturday afternoon and then Jon Cleary & The Absolute Monster Gentlemen on Sunday afternoon, in the unique setting of Beaver Creek Village. Top barbecue connoisseurs from across the state join local chefs, electrifying musicians and world-class microbreweries to dish out a diverse summer kickoff festival that delivers for all ages, May 23 through 25.
Starting on Saturday, May 23, barbecue masters will artfully smoke, grill and roast succulent meat and vegetable creations in a legendary $10,000 cash prize competition. A panel of professional judges will rate pork ribs, chicken and sides based on appearance, taste and tenderness. Champions will be crowned at 4:10 p.m. on the Main Stage in the Beaver Creek Village. Vendors encourage the public to join in on the judgment and vote on Saturday and Sunday to determine the People’s Choice winner for best barbecue vendor. Victors of the People’s Choice Competition will be announced on Sunday, May 24 at 4:10 p.m. on the Main Stage in the Beaver Creek Village.
A free Kids’ Zone will be open from 12 to 4 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday providing activities and arts & crafts designed for kids 12 and under.
At noon, 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, Beaver Creek’s signature Culinary Demonstration Series commences for the summer season, with guest and local chefs providing complimentary barbecue demonstrations using top-notch Big Green Egg grills.
Live Blues and Funk Music
Dan Treanor’s Afrosippi Band Featuring Erica Brown out of Colorado, will start off the concert series at 12 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday with a smooth blast of blues and R&B. Performing in Colorado since 1992, The Delta Sonics have been called “the area’s best harmonica-led band” by the Denver Post, and have opened for nationally acclaimed blues artists such as BB King, Junior Wells, Taj Mahal and Grammy-award winner Charlie Musselwhite. These local hometown heroes take the stage both Saturday and Sunday at 2:30 p.m. Touring on the success of their critically acclaimed 2013 album “Dirty Word”, New Orleans’ Dumpstaphunk continues to take the funk world by storm, and will close out Saturday evening with a whirlwind of groovy melody. New Orleans-based musician Jon Cleary has been a mainstay at the annual Jazz & Heritage Festival and has toured across the country for years, playing festivals like Tennessee’s Bonnaroo. Of their latest work, The New York Times said, “I don’t expect to hear anything funkier this year.” Jon Cleary & The Absolute Monster Gentlemen will close down the festival Sunday evening starting at 4:30 p.m.
Microbrew Festival
Experience one of the largest exclusively Colorado Microbrewery Beer Tastings in the state from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 23. The Microbrew Festival features more than 80 carefully crafted concoctions from 30 Colorado-based breweries. Guests can purchase advance tickets online at www.beavercreek.com/bbb for $40 per person, plus processing fee, or at the door for $50 per person; participants receive a commemorative tasting mug and unlimited beer tastings are included. The event is sponsored by the Park Hyatt Beaver Creek Resort & Spa and will be held outdoors at Centennial Park, located at the base of the Buckaroo Express Gondola. The event’s nonprofit beneficiary, Can Do Multiple Sclerosis, will receive $2 of every ticket sold.
Amateur BBQ Competition
Sunday’s Big Green Egg Backyard BBQ Amateur Competition returns for its third year, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. A total of 15 teams made up of one to three amateur chefs will receive a mystery grilling meat and side dish items to design and prepare in three hours using a Big Green Egg grill. A panel of professional judges will determine the winner. The event takes place at Centennial Park on the back lawn of Park Hyatt Beaver Creek Resort and Spa. The winning team will receive their very own high quality, ceramic, Big Green Egg grill valued at $1,049. Registration for the amateur competition is $85 per team and teams can sign up online at www.beavercreek.com/bbb.
4th Annual Cut & Slice Golf Event Benefiting Can Do Multiple Sclerosis
Back for its fourth year, the Cut & Slice Golf Event presented by US Bank takes place on Monday, May 25 at the Beaver Creek Golf Club from 11:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. New this year, players can enjoy a complimentary breakfast from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. before the shotgun start. The day continues with multiple barbecue and craft beer selections scattered throughout the course. Various competitions will take place during the day including longest drive, closest to the pin and a hole-in-one challenge with a chance to win a trip for two to Pebble Beach. Registration is open and rates are $125 per player; rates include breakfast, greens fee, golf cart, practice balls, tee gift and barbecue and beer on the course.
