Heavy Snow Cancels Second Birds Of Prey Downhill Training Run at Beaver Creek
BEAVER CREEK, Colorado—Oh what a difference a week makes. Following on the heels of last week’s bluebird racing conditions for the World Cup ladies, Mother Nature delivered a major winter storm to Beaver Creek Tuesday evening, bringing heavy snows that forced the cancellation of Wednesday’s second day of Downhill training for the annual Audi Birds of Prey Men’s World Cup Race Week.
Accumulations of over 12 inches of new snow overnight from top to bottom of the Birds of Prey Downhill track forced organizers to abandon the planned training run. Beaver Creek Race and Mountain Operations crews, along with hundreds of course volunteers, will now work to remove the snow from the course as the storms begins to move out of the region, with a goal of holding a training run on Thursday in anticipation of Friday’s race.
“This is nothing new for us,” explained Ceil Folz, president of the Vail Valley Foundation, “although getting a training run in tomorrow is critical after having to cancel the past two days. This storm is obviously a bonus for recreational skiers.”
Tuesday’s training run had to be cancelled when inclement weather in Calgary prevented some of the men’s teams from getting to Beaver Creek following last week’s World Cup races in Lake Louise. The Birds of Prey Downhill is slated for Friday, with Super-G on Saturday and Giant Slalom on Sunday.
