Beaver Creek Officials Dedicate “Lech-Zuers Schuss”, a Section of the New Raptor Ladies Downhill Course in Honor of the Resort’s Sister-City Relationship with Lech
Beaver Creek, Colo., Nov. 28, 2013 – In 2001 Beaver Creek Resort Company officials formalized a sister-city relationship with Lech-Zuers, Austria recognizing that both ski resorts share similarities among clientele, guest service, lodging and amenities and world class ski mountains in intimate alpine settings.
The formal relationship has allowed Beaver Creek and the Lech-Zuers region to benefit from sending delegations to experience the culture in Austria and Colorado.
The sister-city relationship also provides the opportunity for Vail Resorts and Lech to formalize a season pass program providing reciprocal skiing and promotional benefits where Epic Pass holders can ski all of Vail Resorts’ mountain plus St. Anton, St. Cristoph, Stuben, Züers, and Lech in Austria.
Educational and cultural opportunities are provided for teens in both countries through a host family exchange program. Every two years, teens from Austria and the Vail Valley travel to one another’s country to spend 10 days with a host family, allowing the kids to assimilate through language, culinary, and outdoor adventure experiences. The relationship also allows the resorts to highlight each other’s culture at their own events, such as Beaver Creek’s annual Oktoberfest, featuring Trachtenkapelle from Lech.
When Vail and Beaver Creek won the bid to host the 2015 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, the sister-city delegation chose to commemorate the relationship by naming a part of the new Raptor Ladies’ Downhill Course after Lech. On Thanksgiving Day, officials from Beaver Creek and Lech hosted a celebration at the start of the ladies’ downhill to dedicate the “Lech-Zuers Schuss” section of the course. The Lech-Zuers Schuss is located just below the Ladies’ Super G start and features a couple of very difficult turns. The Raptor course has a vertical drop of 710 meters and is 2,460 meters in length.
“Our relationships with the Lech-Zuers region is a tremendous benefit to Beaver Creek and we are thrilled to honor our partnership by naming a part of the new ladies’ Raptor downhill course the Lech-Zuers Schuss,” said Doug Lovell, chief operating officer for Beaver Creek Resort. “Naming part of the course after our sister city strengthens our partnership.”
“The Arlberg is known as the birth place of alpine skiing. The history of ski-racing is connected very close with our area. When Beaver Creek made the decision to be part of the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup they created one of the most spectacular men’s race course, the “Birds of Prey“. Now, focused on the world championships 2015, the “Raptor” should take over this role on the ladies side. Lech-Zuers is very proud, that a part of this downhill course is named after us. The “Lech-Zuers Schuss“ will show the world of alpine skiing, that a relationship in between two ski-resorts is much more than only based on numbers.
