Breck Safety Week is Back!
  • Know the “code” and be entered to win prizes
  • Experience a day in the life of a Breck ski patroller  

BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. — Jan. 17, 2013 —Breckenridge Ski Resort,in conjunction with National Ski Area Association’s (NSAA) National Safety Week, hosts Breck Safety Week from January 19 – 25, 2013. Several events are scheduled throughout the week to educate and remind guests of the Skier Responsibility Code so they can enjoy a safe experience on the slopes.  Other events will focus on avalanche awareness and safety.

Fun and educational events offered Saturday, Sunday, and Monday by mountain safety personnel and ski patrollers include helmet fitting, an avalauncher demonstration on Peak 7, and an avalanche dog demonstration on Peak 8. Weather permitting, Flight for Life will land on the Mountain on Monday afternoon. Guests will also have the chance to stop by the “Open House” at all Ski Patrol huts and meet patrol members, as well as perform trail checks and end of the day sweeps.  A safety tent at the Peak 8 base area will provide a place to learn more about the responsibility code and enter a raffle for prizes.

Saturday, Jan. 19 – Sunday, Jan. 20

10:00am-2:00pm in the Tent Village at the base of Peak 8
Think First: Helmet Fitting - We'll help make sure your helmet is perfectly adjusted to keep you safe!
10:00am-1:00pm
Share three points of the Skier Responsibility Codewith Mountain Safety personnel to be entered in the daily raffle (all over the mountain).
11:30am
Hungry guests can enjoy a free hot dog in Park Lane (Saturday and Sunday only).
12:00pm
Avalauncher Demonstration
The Avalauncher is a long-range ballistic tool used to clear the mountain of avalanche risks. You'll learn how it works, where and when it's used, and watch a firing demonstration to show how this machine can help make the slopes safer.
1:00pm at the top of Colorado Superchair
Avalanche dog demonstration, followed by avalanche awareness and beacon instruction. Meet our avalanche dogs and learn about their critical role in mountain operations. Watch an avalanche beacon demonstration to see how useful these potentially life-saving devices can be in an emergency, and review other tips to help safeguard against avalanche danger.

All Week: (Saturday, Jan. 19- Friday, Jan. 25)

Open house at all Patrol huts
Experience a day in the life of a ski patroller! Stop by a patrol hut and meet the crew, participate in trail checks with patrollers, or accompany patrol on end of the day sweeps (Patrol huts are located on the bottom floor of the Vista Haus, and at the tops of the Independence, Mercury, and Falcon chairlifts).
