Northstar's first opening day was December 22, 1972.  Come celebrate four decades of progress and success with Shaun White as we take a look back at Northstar over the years.

Shaun White will host Northstar California Resort’s 40thBirthday Bash on Saturday, December 22, 2012 in celebration of 40 years of skiing and riding at the North Lake Tahoe resort. The event takes place 40 years to the day the resort opened for skiing for the first time.

With activities for the whole family, including a Burton Snowboard Academy Kids Clinic with White, live music both on the mountain and in the Village at Northstar, a sparkling toast and s’mores in the village, 70’s costume contest and après party at Tavern 6330’, there’s an opportunity for guests of all ages to celebrate.

“Northstar has certainly changed over the years, maturing into a destination resort that is recognized for providing great service and a complete destination mountain resort experience in North Lake Tahoe,” said Bill Rock, chief operating officer of Northstar. “We’re excited to have reached this milestone, and to have Shaun here to celebrate it with our guests.”

Kids ages 7+ signed up for the Burton Snowboard Academy on Saturday, December 22 will be treated to a very special visit from White during their lesson. Those interested in participating in the clinic are invited to sign up in advance on a first-come, first-served basis. The lesson includes a Burton snowboard rental, all day coaching, and an all day limited access lift ticket providing access to beginner lifts and terrain.

Transforming from a day ski area to a year-round destination resort, Northstar has evolved to become one of the top mountain resort properties in the country. Since 2004, over a billion dollars has been invested at Northstar. The resort has come into its own, and now features luxury lodging including the Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe, the region’s only five star hotel property, and the first LEED-certified base area village that has become a favorite après ski hang out complete with shopping, incredible dining options and fire pits surrounding an outdoor skating rink.

Significant improvements have also been made to improve the lift network, snowmaking capabilities, new terrain and skier services. Last season, Vail Resorts invested an additional $30 million in projects at Northstar, including the installation of a new high-speed chairlift and a new ski pod with new glade skiing and two new intermediate ski trails on The Backside of the mountain, construction of the LEED-certified Zephyr Lodge, a new 700-seat on-mountain restaurant, and the construction of a new 22-foot Superpipe designed by Shaun White, who calls Northstar his home mountain and primary training resort.
