Vail Resorts Celebrates National Safety Awareness Week with Safety Themed Activities and Events at Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone, Heavenly and Northstar-at-Tahoe Resorts
VAIL, Colo. – Jan. 14, 2011 – National Safety Awareness Week returns to Vail Resorts, Jan. 15-21, encouraging skiers and riders, guests and employees, to help educate and raise awareness among Vail Resorts’ guests on how to be safer when skiing and snowboarding. Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone, Heavenly and Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort’s safety week schedule includes a particular theme around safety and offers clinics and events around how to be safer on the slopes.
“The safety of our guests and our employees is paramount at Vail Resorts,” said Blaise Carrig co-president of Vail Resorts mountain division. “The activities and events we have planned for National Safety Awareness Week are designed to highlight our safety best practices at each resort, as well as to educate our guests on what they can do to be safer on the mountain not only during National Safety Awareness Week but throughout the entire ski and snowboard season.”
Topics include: terrain park etiquette classes, avalanche awareness, avalanche dog demos, on-mountain safety as well as activities for kids like a safety scavenger hunt.

Beaver Creek’s 2011 National Safety Awareness Week Highlights Include.

10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Snow Rider Safety Alliance and Beaver Creek Ski Patrol Safety Tent located at the base
of Beaver Creek Mountain. Learn more about why members of Patrol and the Safety Alliance, as well as Vail Resorts, encourages the use of a helmet. The booth also will provide information on head and neck injury prevention and participants can receive a free helmet fitting and be eligible to win a free helmet.

Beaver Creek’s Ski with a Ranger program offers a closer look at the flora, fauna and Rocky Mountain landscape with a 45-minute tour provided by a U.S. Forest Service representative. For Safety Week the tour also will focus on skier and snowboarder responsibilities on public land. Tour meets at Patrol Headquarters at the top of Cinch Express Lift (Chair 8) and a valid lift ticket is required.

There will be an open house at all Patrol huts throughout the week, where guests can come in and meet members of the Breckenridge Ski Patrol, do trail checks with patrollers, accompany patrol on end of the day sweeps. Patrol huts are located on the bottom floor of the Vista Haus, and at the tops of the Independence, Mercury, and Falcon chairlifts. In addition, If guests get “caught” skiing safely by Patrol or Mountain Safety during the week, they will become eligible for additional prizes. Terrain Park staff will also be available at every terrain park to talk to guests about how to be safe in the parks.

Keystone Resort National Safety Week Activity Highlights:
January 15-16
10 a.m.- 2 p.m. Think First Tent – Location Dercum Mountain Summit Area. Demonstrations on proper helmet fit as well as the benefits of wearing a helmet. This event is open for all guests and Keystone Ski School Classes. We will also be giving away multi-use helmets to selected guests and one lucky Ski School Instructor. The event is sponsored by St. Anthony’s Keystone, Keystone Ski Patrol, and Keystone Mountain Watch.

11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Photo with Avalanche Dog – Location Dercum Mountain Summit Area. Get a free photo (limit 1) with your favorite Keystone Avalanche dog. Photo will be available for immediate pick up.

Check Your Speed – Location – Could be any trail at anytime! Throughout the week at various locations a Summit County Sheriff will be on hill with a radar gun. If you see him or her ask to have your normal skiing speed checked. The results may surprise you!

January 15-16
8 a.m.-9:30 a.m. Helmet Fitting with Northstar Resort's Kids' Ski & Board School mascot, Marty the Martian, will demonstrate proper helmet fitting and will hand out safety information at "Breakfast with Marty" at TC's Pub in the Village at Northstar.

“Meet the Mountain" tours for skiers and riders ages 13+ who are intermediate and above skiers and riders. Tours will feature important safety tips and general snow safety while on the mountain.

Mine, the children's store in the Village at Northstar, will host the Safety Poster Contest in their store throughout the week. Kids are invited to come in and create a poster based on one or more elements of the responsibility code or smart style code. Mine will supply the crayons and drawing materials. At the conclusion of Safety Week, Northstar Resort will select a winner from each age group, with those posters submitted to the national contest. All others will be displayed in the windows at Mine.
10:30am-3pm Northstar Resort's safety mascot, "Captain Safety," will be out on the mountain throughout the week discussing safety with guests and handing out safety information. Starting at 3pm each day, he will have a table near the Kid's Ski & Board School in the Village at Northstar where he'll hand out brochures, safety related materials and conduct helmet fitting demos.
