The sweetness of opening day
It's here ... Finally. After six months of waiting - all spring, all summer and most of the fall - ski and snowboard season is back. Opening day 2009.2010 at Keystone, Colo.

To say I'm excited is an understatement. I'm one of those fanatical skiers who gets amped at the mere sight of my goggles (that happen to be purple and totally blinged out - you gals out there get it, right?). Who actually enjoys playing the "where the heck is my other glove and wow, guess I lost that hat" game. I've been known to be lulled to sleep by the heavenly sound of snow guns in October. And, I can spend hours in a ski shop in October pacing up and down the rows of fresh new skis while sniffing in the air for the sweet smell of hot wax.

Ahhh. Winter is back and the sense of anticipation hangs in the air. The buzz is felt ...  all around Summit County.

Yep. That's what I'm told.

This is the first year that I missed Keystone's opening day. So, instead of seeing that first group of riders and skiers (with straight skis no less) board the Keystone's River Run Gondola to hoot, holler and carve their first turns of the season at 9 a.m., I was in my office vicariously celebrating opening day on twitter and facebook.

Not quite the same, but satisfying nonetheless, especially because I know in a few short days I'll be the one to heft my skis over my shoulder, to get my pass scanned (beep, beep) and to be hooting and hollering as I carve through that fresh and oh-so-yummy morning corduroy. Keystone, here I come. Let the games begin.
