VAIL, Colo.—At Vail Mountain’s famed Two Elk Restaurant this morning, perched at 11,220 feet above sea level and overlooking the ski resort’s legendary Back Bowls, general manager Doug Wooldridge arrived to work to find all 70 outdoor picnic tables missing.

“We left them out in front of the restaurant last night, but they were gone this morning,” Wooldridge said, tongue in cheek.

Actually, Wooldridge and his staff, along with his counterparts at nearby Beaver Creek Resort had to dig out all picnic tables, trash cans and decks that were buried under nearly a foot-and-a-half of snow that had fallen overnight at Vail and 17 inches at Beaver Creek. Both resorts have received nearly five feet of snow in the past seven days. The latest in a series of storms that has hit Colorado’s Rocky Mountains since Thanksgiving also dumped nearly a foot at Breckenridge and seven inches at Keystone.

“It just won’t stop snowing. Each morning we have to dig our way into work and then dig our way back out again at the end of the day,” said Wooldridge. “But we’re not complaining!”

Since the ski season began, Beaver Creek has received 146 inches of snow, and 103 inches this month alone making it the snowiest December on record. Vail follows close behind with 137 total inches of snow or nearly 12 feet. Breckenridge and Keystone are enjoying the third and fourth snowiest December in the past eight years, respectively, as up to five feet of snow has bestowed those two resorts.

At Vail Resorts’ Heavenly Mountain Resort, which straddles the California and Nevada borders, the biggest storm of the season thus far blanketed the resort with 18 inches of snow overnight, bringing the season-to-date total to five feet.

While resort employees have been working fast and furiously each morning this week to dig out from the snow that has fallen the night before, skiers and snowboarders have been rejoicing in all of the fluffy white powder, only visible from the waist up as they make their way down the slopes.
