Canyons Resort Cuts Ceremonial Ribbon on Golf Course
Canyons Resort, TCFC and Canyons Resort Village Management Association (RVMA) cut the ceremonial ribbon on Canyons Golf Wednesday. The ribbon cutting kicked off a two-day celebration where Park City community leaders and partners took the first swings on course in a shotgun-style tournament. The golf course, which is situated over 97 acres in the heart of the Canyons Resort footprint, was designed by renowned architects Gene Bates and Casey Bates.
“This is a special day in the history of Canyons Resort,” said Mike Goar, Vice President and General Manager of Canyons Resort. “The Resort already has an extensive catalog of summer activities, and Canyons Golf will take guest experience to the next level. After years of anticipation we are proud to celebrate this incredible course with the community.”
“Since taking over real estate development and the golf course construction project in June of 2013, we are delighted with the progress that was made and the fact that we completed the course on time and fulfilled our obligations to the RVMA members and Summit County,” remarked Brian Cejka, spokesperson for TCFC, the master developer at Canyons Resort. “We hope that the course will be an economic driver for Summit County for years to come.”
The 18-hole, par-70 course features over 550 feet of elevation change and spectacular views of the Wasatch and Uinta mountains from almost every hole. The course encompasses 6,246 total yards and showcases unique elements such as soft path features that act as cart paths with playable terrain, four sets of tees at each hole and six holes that interact with skiable terrain. Turf includes bluegrass, native grass mix, and bentgrass.
“Canyons Golf Course is unlike any other course in Utah, and was a challenge to design and build,” said Gene Bates, course architect. “The topography of the area provided unique design elements and dramatic elevation changes, which is sure to keep each golfer on their toes through the course.”
As a continuation of sustainability efforts across the resort, techniques have been implemented at Canyons Golf to support this initiative. Much of the earth work on the course was done with unique construction methods, including crushing several tons of rock on site in order to make topsoil to be used on fairways, saving thousands of gallons of diesel fuel which would have been spent hauling material away. Additionally, the course features a state of the art irrigation system known as fertigation, which allows fertilizer to be directly injected into the irrigation pipes rather than using broadcast spreaders. This modern method of irrigation allows water and fertilizer to be placed exactly where it is needed resulting in much more efficient use of resources.
The shotgun-style tournament featured local community members from Park City and Summit County. Goar, along with Bates and leaders from Summit County, TCFC and the RVMA addressed the crowd prior to the ribbon cutting, thanking members of the design and construction team for all their hard work. The course will open to the public in spring 2015, with pricing and booking information to come.
