Vail and Beaver Creek Announce 2015 EpicPromise Award Winners
  • First Annual EpicPromise Awards honor Vail Resorts employees committed to strengthening communities and fostering sustainable environments
  • EpicPromise Awards to be given as part of the first annual EpicPromise Week
  • Company encourages its employees, community residents and guests to engage in on-mountain activities and events to identify a sustainability commitment and take action to make an “Epic” impact.
This week, as part of the first EpicPromise Week, Vail Resorts will present the first ever EpicPromise Awards to two Eagle County employees for their ongoing commitment to strengthening the local community and fostering a sustainable environment. The EpicPromise Awards are being given at Vail Resorts’ mountains across the country as part of the first annual EpicPromise Week, April 6 -10, 2015, a full week dedicated to celebrating Vail Resorts’ widespread commitment to creating a more promising future for generations to come.

“I am proud to see our EpicPromise Awards come to life and highlight what our employees do to make Eagle County a more sustainable place and even stronger community to be  a part of and live in,” said Chris Jarnot, chief operating officer for Vail Mountain.  “EpicPromise helps us recognize employees who embody our Company’s ‘Do Good’ value by giving back and inspiring others to do so every day.”

In Eagle County, Vail Resorts is proud to honor the following individuals:

EpicPromise Mountain Award
Awarded to employees who lead with environmental sustainability at Vail Resorts, are change agents within their departments, and reduce the Company's environmental impact.
  • Winner: Chris Burns, Beaver Creek Base Area Operations
Chris Burns’ commitment to energy reduction has helped his department make critical changes, from re-developing an energy management system for Beaver Creek’s base area facilities to getting LED light bulbs into a large number of facilities. Burns’ leadership has inspired his employees to always be thinking about energy use and innovative ways to conserve.

EpicPromise Community Award
Awarded to employees who illustrate passion to make a difference in their community, have a continued commitment through donation of time to a cause, and inspire others to take action and give back.
  • Winner: Wendy Mallas, Hospitality
Many local non-profits benefit from Wendy’s time and dedication. Wendy supports the Vail Valley Salvation Army by stocking their shelves with food, bell ringing and organizing other bell ringers during the important holiday season and makes a local family’s holidays a little brighter through the Adopt-A-Family program. When she’s not volunteering for the Salvation Army, Mallas is mentoring local kids, helping people outside of her job description by dog sitting for folks who have been hospitalized and even organized meals for a family with a new baby. She consistently inspires coworkers and friends to volunteer.

Over the last five years, in addition to the impactful work of Vail Resorts employees, Vail Resorts has consistently demonstrated a commitment to sustainability through environmental and community support, including:
  • Over $7.8 million in contributions to more than 250 non-profit partners annually
  • Energy reduction of 10 percent and a pledge to reduce another 10 percent by 2020
  • More than $4 million raised through Vail Resorts’ guest donation program to sustain forest health*
  • A leadership role in the restoration of the Hayman Fire area located on the Front Range of Colorado which improved the water source for 75 percent of Coloradoans
  • 20,000 Company-sponsored volunteer hours donated annually
*Right now, resort guests and pass holders can take action through the Company’s guest donation program. When purchasing any of the Epic Pass products, or when buying advance tickets online or staying in a Vail Resorts lodging property this winter, guests have the option to contribute a $1 to forest conservation and trail restoration efforts in Colorado, Utah and Tahoe. To date, these donations have amounted to more than $3.5 million to sustain forest health.
