Telemark World Cup Races Kick Off This Thursday at Keystone Resort
Keystone, Colo. – February 23, 2010 - Keystone Resort and the Town of Silverthorne will host four World Cup Telemark races this week, beginning Thursday, February 25. The Classic race will be held on both the 25th and 26th with Telemark GS races held on the following two days.  Silverthorne is the hometown of Drew Hauser who was crowned the Junior World Champion last season.  Drew is looking forward to competing at Keystone in front of a hometown crowd and sharing his town with the field of international competitors.

The opening ceremony will be held at the Pavilion in downtown Silverthorne at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 24 and everyone is welcome to this event which will introduce these world class racers and will kick off the Keystone races.

Thirty-five of the top international racers from Europe and Japan will join twenty US racers, most of them members of the US National Team. A group of five US National Team members competed in Norway last month and 17 year old Lorin Paley of Steamboat Springs had a third place podium finish in the Classic event in Bjorli, Norway. Lorin is the first US racer to stand on the podium at this level of racing since 2003.

Telemark racing is combines elements of alpine and nordic skiing. The Giant Slalom races which will be held on Saturday and Sunday include Giant Slalom gates, similar to an alpine race, but also includes a nordic style jump that racers must launch themselves off and then land beyond a distance line or they will have time penalties added to their results. The Classic race which will be held on Thursday and Friday includes the same elements as the Giant Slalom race, but also includes a 360° banked turn called a reipeløkke, pronounced (rap-a-loosh-a) or “rap” for short and then a grueling nordic skate section.
