BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. — Nov. 14, 2014 — Breckenridge Ski Resort is now open for the 2014-15 ski and snowboard season! In a week where more than 30 inches of snow has been reported at Breck, the new, upgraded Colorado SuperChair started turning at 9 a.m. to the cheers of skiers and snowboarders waiting in line since early Friday morning.

The upgraded Colorado SuperChair is now as six-passenger express, providing a 30 percent increase in capacity for Peak 8’s primary lift, providing faster routes to surrounding peaks. The Colorado SuperChair was first installed in 1986 as a high-speed quad, updated in 2002 from a chain drive system to a gear drive system and then again in 2012 with new chairs. Those quad chairs will be used for upgrades to the Beaver Run SuperChair, located on Peak 9.

The honor of being the first person to ride the new chair lift went to Coloradoan and Marine Lance Corporal Colton Carlson. Lance Corporal Colton’s deployments include training and humanitarian efforts in Japan after the tsunami, and a 2012 deployment in Afghanistan. During the Afghan deployment, an IED blast took both of his legs. Carlson learned how to snowboard again thanks to Disabled Sports USA’s annual Hartford Ski Spectacular event, which has taken place annually at Breck for the past 27 years, and returns to the resort, Dec.1-7, 2014.

Local ski legend CJ Mueller was also honored with a ride on the first chair. Mueller was recently elected to the Colorado Ski Hall of Fame for being one of the leading speed-skiing pioneers of the 1980s – becoming the first skier ever to exceed 130 mph in 1987. Mueller remains one of the most colorful characters in Breckenridge, where a ski run on Peak 7 bears his name: “C.J.’s.” Those initials come from his equally colorful nickname, “Crazy John.”

Breckenridge Ski Resort requires all skiers and riders to observe all posted signs and warnings. Closed trails may contain hazards due to limited natural snow coverage and snow making operations. Please keep off closed trails and out of closed areas for safety reasons.  Visit Breckenrige.com for terrain updates and the latest snow report.
